ColourArte Picture Frame and Color Experiment

Picture Frame made with ColourArte products from an Old Battered Canvas

Materials: 
A tired or discarded canvas
 Radiant Gels Dimensional Paints 
Primary Elements Artist Pigments (mix with Primary Elements Clear Glaze Medium)
Aleene's Original Tacky Glue (or other strong glue)

Directions: 

Ever have days when all your art turns into a disaster?  The day I created this canvas must have been one of those days. 

"Monster" canvas

 I found the monster above hiding in my closet when I was cleaning my studio, and I guess it was just so scary that it blocked my memory, because I don't recall making it.   Since I try to use everything without creating an abundance of trash, it is time to upcycle! 

 So . . . what is your first thought about reclaiming a canvas?  

If you are like me, you will normally grab sandpaper, smooth the surface, and gesso over the canvas to provide a new fresh start.  

But "what if?". . . and so the journey begins . . .  

Think of all the things you would normally do to with a bad canvas and then stretch your brain to try something new!

Flip the canvas to the back and paint white gesso on all the surfaces, across canvas, staples, and wood.

(I had no idea at this point what I planned to do with it, but I had taken my first step on the journey, and that is so important!  If you don't know where to start, just leap out there and begin!)

When the gesso dries, paint the entire front and sides with flat black acrylic paint. 

(I painted this under mainly because I wanted to destroy the "monster" . . . but a new idea began to develop while I was painting!  Since  ColourArte is always the Perfect Paint for any yummy, shimmery surface, I wanted to compare how Radiant Gels Dimensional Paints and Primary Elements Artist Pigments (mixed with Primary Elements Clear Glaze Medium) change colors on different background colors.)

These are all painted with Radiant Gels Dimensional Paint from ColourArte.com

Begin painting areas of the white side and the black side with the same colors and compare the results.

 Paint until all areas of the canvas are filled on both sides.  

Fill both sides of the canvas with these colors:  Stargazer, Coral Berry, Spiced Pumpkin, Emperor's Gold, Olive Vine, Guatemalan Green, Autumn Leaf, and Key Lime.  

Continue painting until both sides of the canvas are filled with color.  Compare the differences of painting on a white surface (above) with those colors painted on a black surface (right).






Flip canvas back and forth to compare the differences of painting over white vs. black as a background.

When you are  satisfied with the first color comparisons add more layers, painting one color over another to see how the layers build new colors.

  

Try mixing Primary Elements Artist Pigments with Primary Element Clear Glaze Mediums and paint over colors on the canvas with those mixtures.

Then try another experiment:

Paint over the colors on the white side with mostly cool colors.

Paint over the colors on the "black" side with mostly warm colors.

 (Warm colors are those that make you think of fire and sunshine: Yellows, Reds, Oranges and Cool colors are those that make you think of water, grass, and mountains:  Blues, Greens, and Violets.)

  I loved the abstract compositions on both sides, but decided it would be nice to see the colors side by side, so out came the scissors. 
Push the sharp end of a pair of nail scissors through the canvas near its center and began slicing triangular shapes from the center outward toward the edges of the wood frame on the canvas.

Punch a hole near the center with sharp scissors.  Don't let this scare you!!! It's fun!!!!

Cut triangle shapes fom center of canvas to wooden support at the outside edge.

Cut radiating lines from center of canvas to the wood on all four edges.

Bring the triangles through the middle and twist, curl, fold to form patterns on the back side of canvas.  When satisfied with the design, glue to the wooden frame.

 Turn frame vertical or horizontal to meet your needs.

And now you have a gorgeous shimmering frame for a photo or your next ColourArte project!

NOT your Everyday Birds! :-) A ColourArte Tutorial

It annoys me that people carelessly discard their garbage across our country.  I often reclaim abandoned car hoods, children's rusty bed headboards, old pieces of tires, broken glass, and anything I can remove from the environment that clutters our land to tote home. In my studio I bend, twist, glue, melt,  paint and manipulate the found objects into art pieces.  Studio A B See is always full of objects awaiting their transformation.  

The point is that it is a rare ocassion when  I buy something to alter.  This was an exception.  This book flew off the shelf, grabbed me, and begged me for a  new beginning!  I spent a whole $.25, a quarter of a dollar!, to free it from its dusty home in an antique shop.

Inside the book I found a familiar scene from my childhood . . . an abundance of blank space around text and a seriouos lack of color!

BEFORE

I have altered many pages from the book using ColourArte paints, including Twinkling H20's, Radiant Gels, Radiant Rains, and Silk Acrylic Glazes.  The unending shimmer of these paints is almost impossible to capture on camera, but in real life the pages below almost glow!

AFTER

Stretch Paint!; Minimize Inner Critic!

Not sure that I would call this a finished canvas but I enjoyed the journey and will return to it later to decide.  My main focus was to show how to stretch your paint dollar, but as an added reward I found myself quieting my inner critic!

If you watched my video about Fancy Paper Feathers on Youtube, you know that I misted real feathers with Radiant Gels on top of a canvas.  I rarely rinse a brush without brushing it across a canvas or paper to rid it of most of the paint. It just makes sense! I don't waste the paint.  I simultaneously create new backgrounds that I plan to use at a later date, and that is the case with this canvas that was created when I misted those feathers.   I also save the paper towels where I clean brushes or lift paint.  They make awesome additions for collage work.

Updating Vintage Children's Books Tutorial

 Here is a vintage book that I used to test Twinkling H2O's 

The page below is printed with only two colors, green plus a black outline.  Typical of the times, there are only three colors (green and turquoise, with black outlines) in the entire book.

 I'm going to jazz it up with a makeover!

This eagle drawing was a black and white India ink drawing  in my sketchbook a few days ago.  I  decided to enhance my eagle with some brilliant, bold  colors using my new set of Twinkling H2O's from ColourArte.com.  Always ready to experiment, I activated my new hardpan watercolors by spraying water directly into their container. Then I painted on top of the permanent inks.  If you don't want the ink to bleed, be sure it is permanent!  Love the way the ink lines show through these vibrant colors.

Twinkling H2O's  jars may look small, but the colors go a lonnnnng way.  When I am finished with a creation, I allow the product to dry and then replace the lids.  They can be reactivated later by spraying them with water again.   I love carrying the dry paints when I travel for obvious reasons...no messy spills in the car!  And dry watercolors aren't as bulky or heavy as liquid paints.

My name is Barbara Rankin, and I am so thrilled to be on the ColourArte design team.  I am a self-taught paper and mixed media artist, with my early beginnings making cards and gifts for family and friends.  I picked up my first rubber stamp in 1995, before the internet had so much inspiration to offer up-and-coming artists.  I love to learn, and I love to share what I have learned with others.  I love adding dimension to my projects, and just about everything I make has it in some form or fashion.  I am currently on two other design teams, Altered Pages and House of Cards.  I have been published in several paper and e-magazines, as well as a contributing artist in a book.  I have also been asked to make samples for display at CHA, as well as being a guest designer for Craftwell USA and Unruly Paper Arts.  I call Memphis, Tennessee, my home, which I share with my wonderful husband of 32 years and two adorable Yorkie sisters, all of whom make my life fabulous.

Jill K. Berry

Jill is a mixed-media artist who makes books, maps, paintings and other story-telling structures. She works in mixed-media with a bent towards classical art and teaches painting, lettering, journaling, mapmaking and various other mixed media classes worldwide.

You can her work in Somerset Studio, Letter Arts Review and Cloth, Paper Scissors, Art Journaling magazine, Drawing Lab, Journal It! The Complete Decorated Journal, 1000 Artists’ Books, and various other publications. She has written two books: Personal Geographies: Explorations in Mixed-Media Mapmaking and Map Art Lab and is working on a third.

Tetiana Komarova

Hello everyone! My name is Tetiana Komarova, however in the scrap world I use my nickname Taniko. I’m 27 years old and I live in Kiev, Ukraine. Currently there are three important matters in my life: my family – all my time is devoted to upbringing of my son Tim, postgraduate studies – for already two years all my mental efforts has been thrown to the writing of dissertation, and scrap – in 2011 I plunged into this exciting world and still depend on it.

I like to experiment and to make projects in different styles but my favorite is mixed-media. I adore mixed-media techniques because they give me the freedom to express myself and appear to be the best tool for the realization of creative potential. I formed my own view on this style and my projects are created with using contrasting colors. As for me the best colour combination that works together well is: turquoise+lime+yellow. I’m really obsessed about turquoise colour and you can find it in every my project!)) I like to make lots of layers and add different interesting small details, play with texture paste and acrylic paints, use bright colors and fabrics. My favourite type of craft are layouts 30*30cm, canvases and alter projects. I can’t imagine them without splashes of acrylic paint! My motto is: “Follow your scrap instinct to wherever it takes you”!

Hello all! My name is Marie-Josée Hamel and I am 39 years old. I am a French Canadian living in Gatineau, close to Ottawa, Canada’s capital, with my husband and my daughter, Emily, who is 10 years old. I fell in love with scrapbooking in 2006, while visiting my friend in the United States, and I haven’t stopped scrapping since then. My main source of inspiration is color, so I am thrilled to be designing for ColourArte, because I will have the chance to use tons of wonderful colors on my projects. Hello there! Greetings from sunny Singapore! My name is Yvonne and I love to make stuff, especially using unexpected “found” stuff around my house (or someone else’s) *winks* Cute things, vintage findings, pretty trinkets. I LOVE them all! 

My style is eclectic at best but really a mishmash of whatever tickles my fancy at that point in time! I love to experiment with mediums and play with textures. My projects always involve some form of upcycling and loads of colour.

Magda Polakow

My name is Magda and I always have been known as Magda Polakow. I’m Polish but I live in the UK with my hubby and two four-legged girls. I discovered scrapbooking in 2009 and since then I have been running a blog (http://littleeverland.blogspot.com ).

Before scrapbooking I was painting and drawing a lot which gave me a great background to combine both and fulfil myself in Mixed Media. I create mixed media canvases, tags and alter things but my real love is art journaling. This form of art gives me a freedom and opportunity to experimenting. I like working with various products, mixing them together and waiting to see with what I end up. Experimenting and learning in the same time new things is a great part in my creative journey.

My name is Cindy Brown alias Talkis on some Quebec forums. Those who know me say I am a dynamic girl who left to mark the way. Hyperactive by nature I channel my energy into lots of scrapbooking projects.

Linda Ann Smith

Art is not my hobby; it is my life, and paint is my passion!  For 12 years I was an art hungry child in a small school with no creative opportunities, but my family provided supplies for me to create art on the back of old wallpaper rolls. In college I enrolled in every art class I could find. I earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Education degrees at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Tahlequah is the national home of two Native American tribes, and my works often rerflect that influence.  I traveled to many states and European countries to further my art education through self-guided studies.  I have been an art teacher for 40 years, and particularly enjoy motivating students who claim that they are not artistic.   I believe everyone is an artist and people who say they are not creative just haven’t discovered their media.. Marti Wills

Hello!  I am known in the online paper crafting world as Pezadoodle Designs.  I am very excited to be a part of the new ColurArte design team!  I have been an avid fan of all of the ColourArte projects for many many years.  I have been crafting in one form or another for as long as I can remember – my mother dubbed me the queen of make-and-do when I was little.  I did not discover paper crafting until I had my 3rd child 8 years ago and decided to stay home instead of going back to work.  I stumbled upon Tim Holtz and was mesmerized!  Shortly thereafter I acquired a Cricut machine and between the 2 I had found my passion!  Since then I have owned an online stamping store (since closed), started and ran a crafting magazine called Through the Craft Room Door, taught online classes and been on a host of design teams.  I have 2 grown sons, an 8 year old daughter and a brand new grandson who is adorable!  I have multiple crafting personality disorder and love doing very traditional scrapbook pages and cards, digital scrapbooking and graphic design as well as wild and free messy mixed media pieces and art journals!  In addition I love to sew, crochet, bead, and work with clay.
